Artist's Description

Mike pioneered a kind of Minneapolis-specific street photographic subgenre: the IDS Neck Crane. The tower was so out of scale with anything else in the city that it invited this sort of vertically oriented gawking from Nicollet Mall. For at least ten or perhaps twenty years, this was a sure way to separate tourists from locals while walking downtown: the tourists would inevitably be standing in the middle of the sidewalk, staring up. As the rest of the skyline has caught up with the IDS, you see less of this type of gawking today. But especially from about 8th Street, it’s still around.
